Terry Rose (1939-2017) was a non-representational painter who focused on the physicality and texture of paint as his subject. He juxtaposed subtle, natural colors and vivid, primary colors that vibrate off of each other in space. The intensity of color and calligraphic nature in his more recent work pay homage to his love of China, its culture and its people.

Rose passed away in late 2017 from battling cancer, but his legacy lives on in his art. His work spans over four decades in which he developed multiple styles using various medias and techniques including, but not limited to: print, collage, canvas, wood, aluminum, and ceramic.

Over his career, Rose moved his studio to several locations both inside and outside the USA. Notably, he lived and worked in Colorado, California, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, China, and Mexico. Throughout his travels, he was able to interpret the culture around him and transform it into his own unique expressions.

One of his latest ventures, which can be seen on this website, was his porcelain sculpting. During his time in Shanghai, Rose was commissioned in 2014 to design a new line of ceramic sculpture in Jingdezhen – the porcelain capital of the world. The four pieces on this website were featured in his last show in Boston, USA > China > Mexico (summer, 2017). Rose continued to experiment in this new medium throughout the end of his life.

In 2015, Rose completed major commissions for Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines and Flagship Cruise Lines. Other commissions may be seen in hotels and private complexes throughout Asia, the Middle East and the U.S. Rose’s extensive list of commissions can be found in his resume on this website.

Most of his work is featured here, on his website. Select pieces can be seen in person at Gallery NAGA (Boston, MA), by appointment only.
